Forever Manchester is working with UK Community Foundations to distribute funding raised by the National Emergencies Trust Coronavirus Appeal. This money is being distributed to community organisations responding to the needs of local communities across Greater Manchester via our Community Support Fund.

New Beginnings, based in Stockport, work holistically with families who are supported by Children’s Services for concerns relating to neglect and abuse.

Parents who find themselves in this situation have most likely experienced prolonged episodes of trauma and abuse at some point in their own lives. These traumatic events can lead to issues with mental ill health as well as drug and alcohol misuse.

New Beginnings work closely with parents so that they can develop the strength, knowledge and power to become the parents they want to be and in return, teach other parents how to do the same. They sustain positive change by placing families at the heart of the process.

All of this work normally takes place at a community centre in Stockport but due to Covid-19, New Beginnings have had to move it’s one-to-one and group support online and by telephone. Since the lockdown, however, they have seen an increase in domestic violence incidents and an increase in feelings of loneliness as parents without their children are struggling with their mental health.

With the disruption in support, and concern that the progress made with each parent is at risk of being lost, New Beginnings are keen to use available technologies wherever possible to enable them to continue to facilitate the core part of their support work. However, many families simply do not have the technology to access Apps nor have access to WiFi.

An award from Forever Manchester’s Community Support Fund has helped New Beginnings acquire the technology needed to allow parents to partake in their live online therapeutic group work sessions and reconnect with other parents in the group.
