Forever Manchester is working with UK Community Foundations to distribute funding raised by the National Emergencies Trust Coronavirus Appeal. This money is being distributed to community organisations responding to the needs of local communities across Greater Manchester via our Community Support Fund.

At the heart of Marple, Marple Cricket and Squash Club – also known locally as the Sports Club – provide a range of sports and social activities for all ages. They aim to reach all areas of the community and break down barriers to people accessing sport club environments, encouraging everyone to attend and feel comfortable.

They also host regular young people’s groups to encourage teens to stay connected in a safe environment and a weekly drop-in dementia club for dementia sufferers and their carers. Their modern function room hosts regular club events for people in the local area to enjoy, and throughout the week other local community groups use the facility too.

The impact of Covid-19 meant that the Sports Club and associated activities had to close in accordance with government guidelines, but they were keen play a key role in the community’s response to the pandemic. Supporting the most vulnerable members of the community they are offering a meal, a friendly face, and a listening ear.

By working closely as an emergency response team in Marple with the local Mutual Aid Covid-19 Group, Marple Community Hub Facebook Group, Asda Marple, the Food bank, Co‐op and local schools they have been able to identify and adapt to the changing local need and respond accordingly.

To support the 60 dementia sufferers and their carers that usually attend their weekly drop-in at the club, they are now providing a weekly household essentials pack, delivered by a recognisable, friendly and safe volunteer, with time and a listening ear.

An award from Forever Manchester’s Community Support Fund is helping Marple Sports Club with the provision of items for the household essentials pack to support 60 vulnerable members of the dementia group for 6 weeks.
