We are pleased to announce our two excellent speakers for the next Forever Manchester Women, taking place on Wednesday 19th July 2017, kindly sponsored by Slater and Gordon and held exclusively at Menagerie Restaurant and Bar.

We have two inspirational women from Greater Manchester speaking. Find out a little more about them below.

Angela Rayner – Shadow Secretary of State for Education

Angela Rayner grew up on a council estate in Stockport, experiencing a difficult early family life and was brought up, in the main, by her grandmother. She left school, pregnant, at 16, and was told that “she wouldn’t amount to anything”. Her first job was as a care worker for Stockport Council. She later became a union representative for UNISON, having seen first hand the conditions and poor pay for carers and wanted to get involved to make a difference.

Angela Rayner was elected MP for Ashton-under-Lyne in May 2015 with special interests in health and social care and education. Since then she has held the positions of Shadow Minister (Work and Pensions), Shadow Minister (Equalities Office) (Women and Equalities) and currently is Shadow Secretary of State for Education.

Karen Elliot – Founder and Chair of Bolton Cancer Voices

Having a long history of singing, performing and producing on the amateur stage, Karen Elliot had a keen appreciation of the power of song, the joy it engenders and the sense of camaraderie that develops within a choir. This, together with her interest and involvement in a number of cancer-focused activities locally and nationally, provided the insight to recognise the potential benefits in starting a dedicated community choir for cancer patients and cancer survivors.

Karen wanted to provide a positive, motivational and diversionary environment in which members can have fun, enjoy the challenges and exhilaration of performing and have a focus aside from their illness, and to provide an informal forum for cancer patients and cancer survivors to meet with others in a similar situation, share experiences as they choose and benefit from mutual support and understanding.
