Salford Food Parcels are a food bank in Salford, fighting local food poverty. Set up in September 2011, they provide free food to anyone who is in need , whether this is on a short or long term basis. They provide basic food items and fresh food obtained from donations, food providers or from their allotment. The allotment has been a vital addition to the group, having been donated to them in 2019 when the original owner moved away. With the allotment came chickens and fruit trees, and although the maintenance of it was a big task to undertake, this resource has greatly increased the quality of fresh produce that Salford Food Parcels are able to provide. The group also works in collaboration with the Red Cross who provide destitute asylum seekers with bus fare to attend the project. Along with their weekly food delivery, Salford Food Parcels have also carried out initiatives in previous years that have hugely impacted the wellbeing of local families and children, including their Holiday Hunger project. Started from a conversation amongst local residents, the project ensured that children in the community had access to a packed lunch during the school holidays. During Covid-19, the demand of people who needed emergency food tripled, and this number has remained high ever since. Salford Food Parcels relies on donations, volunteers and funding to help vulnerable families. It is always worth remembering that, if you support Forever Manchester, you support all this. The ability of local community groups and organisations to best help people in their community remains dependant on maintaining support for them.
