After recently announcing that Forever Manchester had teamed up with local community radio station ALL ‘FM’ to undertake a Marathon Radio Broadcast Challenge, our colleague Kev Duxbury has thrown in his own challenge as part of the mix. He is preparing to complete a full marathon distance of 26.2 miles by running 1 mile every hour for 26.2 hours in tandem with the marathon broadcast across the weekend of Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th October. While the marathon broadcast will welcome guests throughout and take the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the work of local groups in our communities and neighbourhoods, Kev will be plodding the streets. He said “I wanted to do something in tandem with the marathon broadcast to support the team’s effort. As I’ve run a marathon before, I thought about doing something different and came up with the idea of running 26.2 miles over 26.2 hours. I thought the idea of running through the night without any sleep would add an extra dimension and difficulty to it – I do not do very well without sleep!” Kev’s marathon effort also provides the Marathon Broadcast Challenge with something of a ‘first’ as there is nothing on record to suggest this has been done before. Kev’s colleague Terry Snowden MBE, who is also part of the marathon broadcast team said “there is some evidence of people running the full marathon distance over a 24 hour period, but it looks like 26.2 in 26.2 could be a first” A Just Giving page has been set up for sponsors and supporters to show their support and by way of saying thanks, all donors will be entered into hourly free prize draws throughout the duration of the marathon challenge period with opportunities to win anything from His & Hers Hoodies through to Fish & Chip Suppers and a host of other things including Meals, Family Experiences, Gigs, Nights Out and Signed Football Shirts. The marathon broadcast challenge event is aiming to highlight the role, importance and support for local community radio alongside raising funds for Forever Manchester to support the valuable work of other local groups within our local communities.
