Greenacres Community Association runs and manages a community centre serving Greenacres and surrounding neighbourhoods in Oldham. The centre provides recreation, leisure, and education facilities that benefit the whole community. Working with local community members, they deliver activities that are varied and diverse, catering to the needs and aspirations of residents and contributing towards a busy and friendly community hub. The centre is home to several registered charities, and over 20 groups use the centre on a weekly basis. They provide opportunities such as Thai Kwan Do lessons, art sessions, dance classes, yoga courses and family play groups, as well as a preschool and afterschool club. Providing a warm and welcoming environment, they also offer free community open sessions with activities aimed at reducing barriers to social interaction, encouraging users to develop to their full potential. The group supports attendees by helping them to break down any barriers, no matter how big or small, whether this is setting up a new class or simply attending a group for the first time. The centre also recently became a ‘Warm Space’, allowing individuals who attend the activities to stay and socialise after their groups have finished, helping to reduce the feeling of isolation amongst some members of the community. By taking pride in managing their community centre, Greenacres Community Association has created a space for local people to meet, learn, socialise, and have a greater sense of belonging and connection to their local community. It is always worth remembering that, if you support Forever Manchester, you support all this. The ability of local community groups and organisations to best help people in their community remains dependant on maintaining support for them.
