Dancing with Dementia provides a place where people living with dementia can participate in social activities with family and friends, using music and dance as tools to improve well-being. Established in 2016, the group creates a welcoming and uplifting atmosphere where members feel accepted and at ease. Through the social connections made at the group, people can share their own stories about living with Dementia, (whether as a sufferer or as a family member or friend) and in turn find support from peers who are facing similar challenges. Music and dance have been proven to be powerful forms of therapy for those living with the condition, creating an uplifting environment which evokes memories and stimulating conversations. Dancing with Dementia provides this in the form of live entertainment and social dance classes. They also organise days out for group members to look forward to, including trips to the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, creating positive memories together that can be discussed with family and friends. Recently the group has expanded to include many people in the local area who are unable to attend their events in person. They work with local care homes, paying for artists to go out into the community to entertain the residents, or arranging sessions where the care homes can bring their residents to social events. They’ve also opened their doors to anyone who feels isolated or alone and those with learning difficulties or special educational needs. Dancing with Dementia has evolved into a valuable asset to their local community, supporting more than 200 people every week. It is always worth remembering that, if you support Forever Manchester, you support all this. The ability of local community groups and organisations to best help people in their community remains dependant on maintaining support for them.
