Community Media Crew Group is a day-care group that provides the opportunity for people with learning disabilities to gain new skills and make new friends. They meet 3 days a week for 50 weeks of the year to share media skills such as Radio and TV production with group users. As well as ‘hands-on’ skills, the group also allows people to come together socially and have fun with friends. Part of this includes the opportunity to get involved in drama and improvisation workshops, which has resulted in member-led street theatre shows in Wythenshawe town centre, along with multiple short films and stage shows. Since March 2013, the group has had their own radio show on Wythenshawe FM 97.2 called The Crew Show, broadcast on Thursdays 4pm till 5pm and listened to by an incredible 14,000 residents. Group members learn a number of skills such as camera operation and audio editing, and as a result they’ve been able to help other local community groups by making films for them to promote their work. Community Media Crew Group provides members with a true sense of teamwork and achievement, with sessions run by experienced drama and media professionals and volunteers. They are hoping to extend their day-care services to 5 days a week in the near future, enabling them to keep working with and supporting people with learning disabilities in Manchester. By supporting people who are traditionally socially excluded from wider society, the group is invaluable to those who attend. It is always worth remembering that if you support Forever Manchester, you support all this. The ability of local community groups and organisations to best help people in their community remains dependant on maintaining support for them.
