The Fallowfield Secret Garden (FSG) is an acre and a half plot of land in the heart of Fallowfield in South Manchester.
We recently funded the group to continue the brilliant work they are already doing. FSG requested money from Forever Manchester to fund five events, which were a mixture of films, arts and family fun days teaching the local community new skills.
The group give people the opportunity to create a project within the wider project so they can feel like they have ownership over what they create, design, build and install. FSG have found that giving people the opportunity, support and backing helps give them a lot of confidence and new skills.
They are also teaching people the benefits about growing their own food and encouraging them to take on a healthily lifestyle.
FSG is all about giving the local residents and wider community a space to build up new skills, make new friends, take part in events and have fun. The place is a hub for children ages 7-16. They play freely and sometimes get involved in the day’s tasks.
There is also a toddlers group that runs once a week, which brings babies and parents together to enjoy the great space that we have created here.
The Fallowfield Secret Garden is all about getting the local community involved in little projects which will help them in lots of ways now and in the future, they grow fruit and veg, make sculptures and benches for the garden, have craft days, do various workshops, have baby and toddler groups and a children’s adventure playground.
Speaking of the possibilities funding from Forever Manchester would give to them, Group Leader, Mark Roberts said: “We are hoping to put events and workshops on all the time. This will help the project to be more sustainable so we don’t have to rely on funders. The toddlers group will be running three times a week and the adventure free play area will be complete for kids of all ages to enjoy. The rest of the project’s infrastructure will be built and the garden side of things will look stunning. We will have many more trained volunteers in all different fields that will benefit the project and themselves. I would like many more opportunities to come about to offer out to the core group to help develop their skills and careers further.”
