The Angel Project
We recently funded The Angel Project, based in Middleton, who we have worked with for some time now.
After many years working with volunteers and vulnerable adults, Sue Scott decided to leave her job and set up The Angel Project Community Café in the heart of the Langley estate in Middleton, Rochdale. The project works with residents who have mental health issues, health related conditions, older people and vulnerable people who wish to benefit from support.
Sue obtained a boarded up shop, invested some of her own money and with an award from Forever Manchester as well as donations from local businesses, the café opened on April 30th 2014.
The two awards The Angel Project has received from Forever Manchester have enabled Sue and her fellow volunteers to get the project off the ground. With the funding a volunteer training and support package has been developed. Volunteer support is central to the Angel Project and from the outset a variety of placements were offered, from refurbishing the site to working in the café, with every placement designed around each individual’s needs and circumstances, promoting the volunteers’ overall wellbeing, skills and talents.
One volunteer has now been employed by the project and stated “I never knew I could do things like this, it’s inspirational and I am learning so much. I never thought I would end up with a job, I’m so chuffed”.
The café acts as a community hub, hosting a variety of community projects including an event celebrating National Older People’s Day with an afternoon tea party and time to talk on World Mental Health Day. They also refer people for books on prescription, have set up out of hours self-support groups for people in recovery from drug/alcohol addiction, and have hosted activities for children in the school holidays.
Support groups have said how brilliant it is to have somewhere to go out of hours and right in the heart of the community: “it helps if I feel I need someone to talk to”.
The general response in the community has been so positive that Sue was recently nominated to receive a surprise visit from Mark Wright on the ITV1 program Surprise, Surprise. Mark visited The Angel Project and presented a delighted Sue with a bouquet of flowers to thank her for all her community work.
