MaD Theatre Company are an community organisation provides quality and affordable drama workshops for disadvantaged young people and adults in the Greater Manchester area. They enable young people to gain experience and skills in all aspects of performance to increase their confidence, self esteem and life skills and to improve their education and employment opportunities. As well as offering accreditation and employment they also devise and perform original plays at numerous professional theatre’s throughout Greater Manchester.
Forever Manchester’s relationship with MaD Theatre stretches back over 15 years where we have been able to fund and support the great work they do across the region.
Rob Lees set up MaD Theatre Company as he found that there were little or no creative platforms available to members of the community. His motivation was to provide young people, who would not normally be given a voice, with a way to express themselves creatively. As a local, Rob believes “Mancunians have a unique air about them and I wanted to showcase this through the medium of theatre.”
Over 200 people per week are involved in their drama groups and rehearsals. Under Rob’s direction the theatre works with local members of the community to encourage adults and children to get involved in all aspects of theatre production, including acting, set design, writing and marketing, and works 6 to 7 days a week offering affordable drama workshops and accredited courses to around 150 people.
To give you a taster about ‘Gin and Chronic Arthritis’
“Marilyn is not your typical Nanna. She drinks Gin for breakfast, Ice Skates each Tuesday and has numerous internet lovers. When one of these men, ‘Wheelchair Barry’ takes her to a psychic night at the local pub Marilyn gets a message from her childhood sweetheart from beyond the grave. She is over the moon but Barry is consumed with jealousy.”
Miss it and your life will be that bit emptier than it should be. The evening will be hosted at The Midland Hotel in Manchester on 20th February 2015.
In May 2013 Mad Theatre kindly performed a short piece from their ‘Posh Tramps and Papooses’ at Forever Manchester’s First Friday event.
‘Posh Tramps & Papooses is a hilarious modern fairy tale where class and cultures collide.
Between July 2009 and July 2010 , MaD Theatre performed ‘Angels with Manky Faces’ at The Library Theatre and The Dancehouse Theatre in Manchester. The play was inspired by the book, Gangs of Manchester by Andrew Davies, which tells the story of the Manchester’s Scuttlers, Britain’s first youth cult. Set in the streets and gin shops of Ancoats in 1894, against a filmic backdrop capturing the bustle of Manchester’s Victorian slums the play is packed with Mancunian humour and swagger. The live action was set against a filmic backdrop, and interspersed with full filmed scenes by Manchester filmmaker Paul Cliff that include cameos by the likes of Clint Boon, Mike Joyce, Twisted Wheel, FC United, Terry Christian and Jon Henshaw to name but a few.
Recorded at the launch of Angels with Manky Faces, Rob Lee’s who runs Mad Theatre talks about the play and the group in general.
