North Manchester Ladies Jewish Drama Group

April 5, 2017

As part of the lead up to the next Forever Manchester Women on Wednesday 19th April, we took a look at an amazing grassroots North Manchester-based women’s organisation that reflect exactly the type of group the networking event aims to help support.

North Manchester Ladies Jewish Drama Group (NMLJDG), based in Whitefield synagogue in north Manchester, run weekly drama workshops for ladies and girls to give them an opportunity for expression, to develop new (or hidden) skills and talents and to build confidence. They attract many single and isolated women to their weekly sessions and this has led to them getting involved in other community or work activities.

The group came about quite organically with five or six women enquiring about drama workshops. A local actor came forward to take the weekly workshop sessions and began attracting 10-12 women each week. As the weeks progressed, the women, beginning to develop their confidence, considered putting on a performance to show off their new-found talents, and give them something to work towards. NMLJDG have attracted women from Salford to the group, and also to the audience for the shows.

Just over a year ago, NMLJDG were awarded funding from Forever Manchester to purchase various equipment items, props and costumes. The highlight of their calendar is the performance that they stage over two nights each year. The performances are written to include all the women and girls who wish to be in the show, and takes their personalities and talents into account. This personal approach is very positive for the women who attend the group, many of whom lack confidence and would never “audition” for an amateur production.

Now in its 4th year, the show is a commissioned bespoke piece touching on history, heritage and current issues, which last time involved 26 women on stage and behind the scenes, and attracted over 500 women from across the wider Manchester area to the performances.

One participant commented on what she gained from the experience of taking part in the show: “I like having the opportunity to perform, especially in my own community and also meeting talented people of all ages from across North Manchester. Everybody respected each other and worked well together.
